Comparative evaluation of diplomas earned in your home country (Top)

You should know:

That the education system in Québec may differ from the one in your home country. Here, the standard educational process is as follows:

  • Primary school (6 years);

  • Secondary school (5 years);

  • College level, offering pre-university studies (2 years) or technical studies (3 years);
  • University, offering mainly three levels of studies: Undergraduate studies = Bachelor's degree (3 years); Graduate studies = Master's degree (2 years); Doctoral studies = Doctor's degree (2 years).

In the Employment section on the Immigration-Québec website you'll find relevant information about the Québec job market and some tools to familiarize yourself with the Québec education system and get a comparative evaluation of academic credentials earned outside Québec, for specific countries.

Professional Orders (Top)

You should know:

  • That several trades and professions in Québec can only be practiced if they're recognized by a professional order or association. In fact, for several trades and professions, you must get a certificate or permit.
  • In Québec there are 45 professional orders and several associations whose mandate is to protect the public.
  • These organizations have regulatory authority over professions and trades. To avoid unpleasant surprises on your arrival, find out before your departure about the regulatory standards applicable to your profession or trade in Québec.

To learn more about the conditions that have to be met before you can work in your occupation in the Mauricie region, click on "Finding out about regulated professions or trades" in the Employment section on the Immigration-Québec website. In addition to detailed explanations on this topic, you'll find a list of regulated professions and trades in Québec.

Procedure for finding a job in Québec (Top)

You need to know:

  • That a job search in Québec is a very specific process (involving, for example, writing your résumé, etc.).
  • That when applying for a job, it is recommended to comply with certain standards (for example, giving the employer a cover letter along with your résumé).
  • That about 80% of job offers are not posted. In other words, most jobs are not advertised in newspapers or on the Emploi-Québec online placement site, for example. Therefore, you would be well advised to create your own contact network (by introducing yourself to potential employers and representatives of job search services (local resources include: Stratégie Carrière, Job Search Center and Emploi-Québec)). It is also recommended that you visit the companies you're interested in, to find out about job opportunities and, if suitable, make an application.

To learn about the job search process, refer to the Job Search Guide on the Emploi-Québec website. You'll find useful tools for completing the steps required, including examples of résumés and cover letters, resources available to find a job (local employment center, online placement.), and tips to prepare for a good interview, etc. This guide will help make your job search more successful.
